Colorado to New Mexico
Day 3
To The Rockies
20/04/2024
Time to leave Denver - they are expecting 21 inches of snow tomorrow! Also, the hotel is full of people attending a ‘Pot Conference’. Very strange but there is a lot of marijuana as it is legal. So we hit the road, destination Manitou Springs. Drove out of the clouds of Denver and found blue in the sky, but still freezing.
Today Geoff ticked an item off his bucket list - we drove up Pike’s Peak (which is over 2 miles high). We thought it might be closed because of the snow but it was open until just short of the top. Spectacular scenery - a combination of the sunshine, the mountains and the hoar frost on the trees was amazing. I found it quite emotional. More snow is expected so it may be closed again tomorrow, What a privilege.
We spent the afternoon wandering around Manitou Springs, an obvious tourist destination with lots of tacky shops but a lovely atmosphere. We drove and had a look at Colorado Springs which is only down the road. We visited there before but think we only saw the old town.
All in all a lovely day, Hopefully we will find some more sunshine tomorrow as we head south - and a little warmth.
