Colorado to New Mexico
Day 19
Bikes, Chillis & Pecans
06/05/2024
A travelling day today from Almagordo to Truth and Consequences, about a 2
mile drive.
We discovered a bit more about the accident in the White Sands park. Apparently it was an F16 that came down last Tuesday. They are still trying to get it out. The RAF base at Holman is only next door. The pilot is very poorly but is still alive. They do not know when the park will open again, it is obviously a difficult operation.
We travelled north again via Los Cruces which is close to the Mexico border. We had to pass through immigrant checkpoints. Los Cruces seems to have grown since we were last there.
We discovered where all our pecan nuts come from (maybe). There were miles and miles of pecan orchards, and chilli farms. At one point whilst we were stopped for a photocall, Geoff spotted loads of headlights in the distance. It was a motorcycle club out for the day, mostly Harleys. We caught up with them in the next town, called Hatch, where they were all queued up for a BBQ. How they all keep their bikes so shiny and spotless i will never know.
We did not go on the freeway but on a secondary road that ran alongside it in places. We arrived in Truth or Consequences early this afternoon. We are staying at The Rocket Inn. A very quirky place run by a lovely couple who we caught doing the housekeeping.
The only place we could find open (Sunday closing) was a pizza restaurant which was actually superb.
We will investigate the town tomorrow. Lots of galleries and a huge number of street murals. The town seems to have a really nice feel abut it - we shall see.
