Colorado to New Mexico
Day 13
Meet The Locals
30/04/2024
We have met some lovely people today in Amarillo. We started the day with a visit to Amarillo Botanical Gardens. A wonderful place with a very peaceful atmosphere. So different from the gardens in Albuquerque, which were large and rambling with not much flora. The local gardens were very well tended by lots of gardeners. It appeared to be planted so that there is always lots of colour during the year, and with the best array of iris I have ever seen. We spent some time there, some of it feeding the coy and just sitting in the sunshine.
We then made a visit to Bill’s Backyard Classics! Two huge warehouses packed with beautifully kept, and we are assured are dusted 3 times a week. All in near, if not perfect, condition. They belonged to a local benefactor who died in 2020 closely followed by his wife. A lovely old gentleman showed us around with stories about all the cars. What he did not know was not worth knowing. He said the collection is now owned by the two sons, who say they will keep it together. However, he said it is worth in the region of $12m so whether the money will cause them to sell, who knows. It would be a shame.
Together with a walk around a lake it was a very restful morning. We did manage to wash the car this afternoon - it was disgusting.
This evening we ate at a well recommended Thai restaurant. Apart from a couple of people popping in for takeaway we were the only customers. The young couple who own it and do all the cooking were enchanting. They bought us extra bits and were very chatty. I am sure had we been staying in Amarillo we would be visiting again.
It is now about 7 pm and still very hot. Blue sky with just a few fluffy photographers’ clouds. Apparently tomorrow will be similar. We leave here then and head south for one night in Canyon and then maybe on to Clovis.
