Colorado to New Mexico
Day 15
Alien Country
02/05/2024
We left Canyon earlier than we intended as we did not have to go far before we were back in the New Mexico timezone and with an extra hour to play with. It was a long drive. We stopped off in Clovis for refreshment - there is always a Starbucks.
The road was extremely long and very straight. We went through a town called Hereford which pertains to be the cattle capital of the world. Obviously full of Hereford cattle. We passed by an amazing number of stock pens with thousands of cattle. If it is anything like California they spend time in the pens being fattened up. There are hundreds of huge silos full of grain. It makes one think seriously about becoming vegetarian. For some time we ran along the side of the railway and trains that seemed to be abut a mile long were close behind each other. Most being pulled by 3 or 4 engines. Quite a few of them were stacked full of containers for Amazon Prime. Wonder where they were going.
We eventually arrived in Roswell which is famous for its stories of aliens, which the town promote to its full potential with models of aliens all over the place. Some of which were rather tacky. The whole town seems to centre around one main street.
In the afternoon we went to the Anderson Museum for contemporary art. Not something I like very much and, having had other bad experiences with what one considers as art, was a bit sceptical. However, it was brilliant, what contemporary art really should be. Superb gallery and free to go in!
The picture is of a deserted silo and buildings in the centre of Roswell, of which there was also a painting in the gallery.nn
Tomorrow we may visit another gallery before we leave Roswell, mainly as the building itself it meant to be superb. We shall see.
