Florida 2025
DAY 9

A day in Venice
21/03/2025
A day in Venice It was meant to be a relaxing day, however, we did rather a lot.
The first call of the day was to the beach and the new pier. Another lovely day and a walk to see all the fishermen on the pier. Even though fairly early in the morning there was hardly a parking space on the beach. We did not realise it when we booked but the past couple of weeks have been the Florida spring break, which accounts for the 100s of people everywhere we go. However, it comes to an end tomorrow so hopefully there will be less people around d next week.
We next visited the Venice Arts Centre where they have their spring exhibition. Very interesting. Some of the paintings were priced in the $1000s. We had to vote for our favourite (which included photographs, paintings and massed media. My favourite was a very small painting of two men in a kitchen. I thought it was fabulous. We all voted for something different. Just shows how subjective art is.
We descended on Venice to have a look at the shops. Alison wanted to go to the Venice Olive Oil Shop. I have never seen, and tasted, so many flavoured balsamic vinegars. Who would have imagined strawberry, kiwi and soda balsamic vinegar. Delicious. The very eccentric shop assistant gave us a bottle to take home. So many things to buy. I ended up buying an avocado cookery book.
This afternoon Alison and Geoff went on a walk to see if they could find the eagle’s nest they had heard about on the golf course. I watched the zoom meeting from the club. I thought Phil Penman was exceptional. Loved it.
This evening we went for dinner at the Gold Club, followed by the lecture bye John Oldring. Fabulous lecture all about scaling Everest. Loads of information and his images beautifully illustrated his descriptions of the conditions etc. We met some of Alison’s friends, most of whom came from New Hampshire. Lovely people. A lovely evening was had by all.
Tomorrow we are on the move again, to St Petersburg , after we have been out to find the newly hatched Sandhill Cranes on the golf course. Hope we find them.
My picture is of one of the dolphins that accompanied the boat yesterday.
