DAY 16 - Thursday 27 March

Spanish St Augustine
The road to St Augustine
27/03/2025
After one night in a really lovely hotel in Deland we set out via a scenic route to St Augustine. Previous to this we had only stayed south of Deland but now we travelled north and right through the city. A rather nice and prosperous university town, beautifully kept. Geoff had planned a picturesque route which headed for the Atlantic coast. Locally for once we were travelling through a lot of countryside with not too much traffic.
There has been a lot about Trump locally - he seems to be in a lot of trouble, but just doesn’t care. Each time he is interviewed his response to questions seems to be ‘I did not know that’ or ‘nobody told me about that’. You feel he cannot go on like this but he just seems to barge his way through everything.
We hit the coast at Flagler Beach. The sand just seems to go on for ever. A lot of the beach appeared to be privately owned and further on houses appeared between the road and the beach, which is a shame.
We stayed on the coast, eventually coming up into the island off St Augustine. Our hotel was just on the island before you came off into the Historic District. We were early so left our car in the hotel, a beautiful Art Deco building, and walked into the town. Got all our steps in today. We had to go over the river bridge into town and were caught by it having to go up for boats to go through, going and on our return. Very VERY windy!
St Augustine is beautiful. The historic district was apparently built by the Spanish and the buildings are lovely. You could imagine you were in Spain. We will probably go in again tomorrow.
We thought we would go to a restaurant a couple of buildings away from our hotel, O’Steens. There were people queuing when we went back to the hotel at about 3 pm. We ventured out at 5 and they were still queuing. There are very long benches outside to wait. You give your name and number in your party and they call you. You cannot make a reservation - a sign says if you made a reservation you are in the wrong place. Wonderful staff who tell you the history of the place as they serve you. No credit cards and no cheques and no alcohol - cash only! From another era. Superb meal, lovely fresh seafood.
We will see what tomorrow brings. I like it here.
