DAY 13

Spanish Moss
A No Drive Day
25/03/2025
All I wanted for breakfast was some cereal and a small bowl of fruit! What did I get but full to overflowing bowl of granola, a bowl of fruit, a bowl of yoghurt and four slices of toast! Gosh, I ate about a 6th of it. They do love to fill their plates: you never seem to be able to see the plate.

We went off for a walk around Mount Dora. A quirky little town which has been slowly turned over to the tourist, mainly restaurants, over 100 according to Trip Adviser, and boutique shops. Nice to have a wander round though.

We had booked a boat trip for this afternoon. We set off across the lake and into the canal that joins it with the next one. A mile of dense trees etc. filled with bald oaks and hung with Spanish Miss (see picture). It was all very southern and just like the deep south films you see. We did well to go on a Monday, and just after the Spring break. The boat people told us that at the weekend the boats are practically nose to tail and all playing loud music. It was very quiet and mystical. We went to places they cannot usually go and saw huge alligators, an osprey fishing, bald eagles, turtles, a red shouldered hawk, pipe fish (which I learned are related to sea horses and sea dragons, and fabulous lengths of water overhung with Spanish Moss. It was magical.

This evening we went out into the town again for dinner at a small pizza restaurant called Back Porch. Very different flavour pizzas, we had two flavours half and half in one pizza, and very good it was too. Followed by one of the best Creme Brûlée I have had in a very long time. To top it all the staff were lovely and the music fabulous: an introduction to the Avett Brothers. I am sure we will be adding some of their music to our collection when we get home.

We ventured to the rocking chairs on the hotel balcony to watch the sun go down. However, it didn’t - too much cloud. After an interesting chat with three ladies just come for dinner from Orlando we retired to bed.

I think we are going to find another lake tomorrow that has a wildlife trail.
