Return to the Everglades
07/04/2025
After a lovely night in our ‘apartment’ we decided to visit Fakahatchee Strand, a bit of the Everglades we had not been to before. It took us back past Port of the Islands where we spent out first couple of nights. It was a bumpy drive and not very productive, probably because it is so dry. However, Geoff managed to find two huge alligators at the side of the road, one of which was probably one of the biggest we have seen. They were in the undergrowth next to the track, next to a little pond. They appeared to be a long way from any good amount of water. There were some strange things in the water which they were probably eating, they looked like large tadpoles!.
The larger one shot into the water and a few minutes later the smaller one shifted into the water at huge speed. Makes you remember how quickly they can move if they want to.
Back on the 41 we visited another boardwalk but it was too hot to go far, for me anyway. It was in the 90s again. I fancied visiting a very small town we had. Visited to join a chap who took us out on his boat one evening. It was called Goodland. However, as we got close cars were parked on the side of the road, their number becoming more and more the closer we got. In the town it was so packed, hundreds of people but we had no idea what was going on. There was absolutely nowhere to park so sadly we left. We came back through Marco Island, which was nice.
Relaxed in the hotel this afternoon by the pool and Tiki Bar. Did not even fancy dinner tonight so shared a soup and salad from the supermarket.
Had a last trip to Michaels this evening but it was only a small one. I shall miss it when we go home. It is amazing that we have to put the satnav on to get from one side of the main highway to the other. We had to put in Hotel - Michaels, Michaels - Public Supermarket, Publix back to hotel. Each trip only about 2 mins but very complicated!
Picture of one of the thousands of cyclists who have the right of way over everything and the myriad of signs in this place.
