Florida 2025

DAY 21 - 1 April

With drink and cigar, nothing more
Another hot day in Sanibel
02/04/2025
The day started this morning with breakfast at The Lighthouse Cafe, which is assuredly the best breakfast in the world, or that is what they say. We went there when we came to the island before and there were queues outside. Now they have moved to new premises and there were no queues. The breakfast was lovely but the owner said they were only doing 50% of their previous business. I get the feeling that since the hurricane business has changed a lot. A good number of the shops and cafes are closed. The standard of the fashion shops has dropped dramatically. It used to be a paradise for finding original quirky clothing, but not any more, it is all a bit down market.

We were off to the J N Darling Wildlife Refuge again this morning. We found the osprey we had seen before, with two chicks who are very large, and flexing their wings. I get the feeling they will not be on the nest for too much longer. The parent had brought back a large fish which it was dissecting for its offspring.

Further along we found another osprey in the top of a very tall tree, and she/he had caught a very large fish which it was devouring.

We visited Captiva which is the posh end of the island. There has been huge movement of sand during the hurricane. We have seen people filling sandbags, presumably preparing for any future hurricane.

The afternoon was spent by the pool and this evening we have been back to the refuge. I can see us going there every day. You see something different every time. There were quite a few serious photographers there today. I felt very inferior with my small lens!

The picture is one for our Visual Art subject this month of 'negative space'. Just a man sat on the edge of the sea with cigar in one hand and drink in the other. He looked content.
